Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are crucial safety devices designed to detect when electricity is taking an unintended path to the ground, which could potentially include a person. If a GFCI detects such a hazardous condition, it immediately shuts off the power to prevent electric shock or electrocution.

GFCIs are typically installed in areas where electrical circuits might come into contact with water, as these locations pose a higher risk of electrical shock. Common areas for GFCI installation include:

  • Pools
  • Garages
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry Rooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Near Spas
  • Outdoor Areas

A GFCI monitors the flow of current through an appliance. If it detects that the current is not flowing as expected, it quickly cuts off the power—often within milliseconds. This rapid response helps protect against common electrical hazards such as ground faults, overheating, fires, and damage to wire insulation.

GFCI outlets can be identified by their distinct appearance, which includes two buttons labeled “Test” and “Reset.” To ensure a GFCI is functioning properly, press the “Test” button; this should cut off the power to the outlet. After testing, restore power by pressing the “Reset” button. To maintain safety, test your GFCIs once a month, as they do have a limited lifespan.

Ensure that GFCIs are installed and operational in your kitchens, bathrooms, garage, and outdoor areas. Note that refrigerators are not compatible with GFCI outlets and should not be plugged into them.

Investing in GFCIs is a cost-effective way to enhance your family’s safety.
